Talbert, a top-grossing playwright with a string of blockbuster national tours under his belt, made his feature directorial debut with the Sony Pictures comedy First Sunday, starring Ice Cube, Tracy Morgan, and Katt Williams -- opening as America's #1 Comedy. Talbert's second film, Fox Searchlight's Baggage Claim, marked the first time an African-American author adapted and directed his own novel. The Paula Patton starrer again opened as America's #1 Comedy. Talbert's third feature, Universal Pictures' Almost Christmas, starring Danny Glover, Gabrielle Union, and Mo'Nique, again took the #1 Comedy spot, becoming the highest grossing and most critically acclaimed film of Talbert's career. That success would be immediately followed with the Ted Melfi-penned Netflix Original El Camino Christmas, which starred Luke Grimes, Tim Allen, Vincent D'Onofrio, Dax Shepard, and Jessica Alba. A film Talbert would direct and produce. Talbert's fifth feature, Jingle Jangle, is Netflix's first original live-action musical. The film stars Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker, Emmy winner Keegan Michael Key, and Tony Award winners Anika Noni Rose and Phylicia Rashad. With original songs by EGOT winner John Legend, and eight-time Grammy winner Phillip Lawrence. It is set for release holiday 2020. David E. Talbert is a graduate of Morgan State University and later attended New York University's accelerated film program.
