Yatsushiro in the southern prefecture of Kumamoto is known for its 777 steps and castle ruins and that is where actress Ishida Eri was born. She grew up in an orphanage. Her debut came in 1978. She appeared in the TV serial Ultraman in 1980. She quit mid-series because legend had it that actresses in that series never succeed, which prompted her management to pull the plug. Her character was killed off. She reappeared at the end of the series as an android. She was topless in 1981's Enrai ('Distant Thunder'), which added to her the popularity. She was awarded both the Best Actress and Best New Actor prizes at the Japan Academy Awards for her role in Distant Thunder in 1981. She married J-pop musician Fujimaru Yoshino in 1985. The divorce came in 1990. She won the award for Best Supporting Actress at the 9th Yokohama Film Festival for Choochin ('lantern') of 1987. She also won further Japan Academy Awards in 1989 and 1991. Ishida was in 2014's Vancouver No Asahi ('The Vancouver Asahi'), which told the story of a group of Japanese-Canadians. The film was the winner of the Audience Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival where it had its world premiere. She was the subject of a photo book by photographer Helmut Newton in 1993. She stripped in Gina K of 2005, which turned heads as she was over forty at this time. She was the subject of a nude photo book simply called 56 in 2017. It depicted the beauty of a fifty-six-year old woman. Japanese national broadcaster NHK reported on 56 and added to her fame. Like all Japanese actresses she has music to her name, two singles from 1983. One of them was written by her future husband. She also issued a full-length in 1984.
