James Broadwater grew up in Cleveland, Mississippi, the oldest child of Jay and Ruth Broadwater. He has two younger siblings. He is married to Lelane Broadwater, and they have one son, Joshua. James knew that he wanted to make Christian movies in 1992, but considered it unaffordable for anyone outside of Hollywood. In 2012, he saw that small, independent movies could be made for an affordable price, and at the same time, Joshua asked him whether he'd like to make a movie. He and Joshua started 82:3 Pictures together in 2013. James, Lelane, and Joshua have all acted in each of the first two feature films that the company has made: Bully's Bane (2016) and The Treasure of Beijing (2019), and have also served in roles on the crew as needed. In 2019, James worked in several roles as a background extra in the Hollywood film 12 Mighty Orphans, and gained valuable experience seeing how the experienced professionals do it.
