Brett was born in Toledo, Ohio to parents James Lore Murray (Major General, USAF and Aerospace CEO) from Newton, North Carolina and Phyllis Jennings Murray from Plains, Georgia, hometown of President Jimmy Carter. Brett and his family moved to Point Clear, Alabama in 1983 until moving to Los Angeles in 1996. He returned to the south in 2003 and resides in New Orleans, Louisiana. Brett's interest in film began in high-school while writing, directing, and acting in short films with childhood friend and Producer Scott Lumpkin. Coming from a musical background Brett learned sound at a young age by mixing for student films, live music, and theatrical productions. In 1992 Brett began working on his first film, "Under Siege" where he observed veteran Sound Mixer Scott Smith. This led to his initial production sound interest. After high-school Brett attended the "Maine Media Workshops & College" graduating in cinematography and camera operation. In 1993, Sound Mixer Whit Norris offered Brett an opportunity to learn production sound on his next film in Atlanta. This led to Brett's production sound career.
