Amrou Al-Kadhi was born on June 23, 1990, in London. They are a writer/director/performer, known for Anemone (2018) (2018), Hollyoaks (1995) (2018), and Christopher Robin (2018) (2018) . Amrou has two TV-series in development - as star, co-creator and co-writer, "Nefertiti", a comedy series in development with Big Talk Productions and Channel 4 Comedy, and as co-star, co-creator and co-writer with Ellie Kendrick, "Beards", in development with Playground Entertainment and BBC Drama. Amrou Al-Kadhi has three feature films in development - as writer/director, "Layla", with Film 4 & Fox Cub Films and an Untitled Project with BBC Films & Sarah Brocklehurst Productions, and as writer & star, "Glamrou", with the BFI & Sarah Brocklehurst Productions & Farhana Bhula. Amrou is the writer/director of four short films that all share a focus on queer intersectional people of colour. The latest is "Anemone", created with BBC Films and Film London, a film about a non-binary teenager who expresses their non-binary identity through the magic of marine life. The second is a commission for Nowness, an exploration of how female-bodied drag queen "Victoria Sin" transforms social space through their drag - this gained official entry into the BFI London Film Festival. The third is an autobiographical short film entitled "Run(a)way Arab" - which thinks about the relationship between drag culture and Middle-Eastern femininity, and a genderqueer Arab boy's memory of their Muslim mother (screened at The London Short Film Festival, BFI Flare, LA Outfest, and distributed by Peccadillo Pictures). The fourth is an experimental short documentary commissioned by the BFI & BBC4, called "Clash", critiquing how period dramas erase the diverse reality of Britain. It is told through candid interviews with queer people of colour, alongside staged parodic period drama sequences. It was broadcast on BBC 4 on the 24th of September to 125k viewers, and is now available on BFI-player. Amrou wrote and starred in the short film "Nightstand", executive produced by Stephen Fry and distributed by Peccadillo Pictures theatrically and on DVD. The film has screened at festivals globally, including the BAFTA recognised LSFF and Oscar qualifying Athens International Film and Video Festival, and LGBT Festivals from Paris to Melbourne. Whilst at Cambridge University, Amrou set up "Denim", a musical comedy drag troupe that they are the lead performer of, sponsored by MAC Cosmetics and Bumble and Bumble. They have performed to diverse audiences around the UK for 6 years. Denim achieved a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Underbelly) in 2017 & 2018, and received 5* in The Scotsman, alongside 5 & 4 star reviews for many publications. This show then transferred to The Soho Theatre, receiving 4* in The Guardian. Other venues Denim have performed in include The Arts Theatre Leicester Square, Trafalgar Studios, the Bethnal Green Working Men's Club, headlining Port Eliot Festival, and a secret set with Florence and the Machine at Glastonbury the year that she headlined.
