Oskar Krastanov was born on August 21st, 1937 in Moscow; he studied two years in Poland and graduated in Film Directing from FAMU, Prague in 1977. He has worked at the Newsreels and Documentaries Studio since 1964. He is a director of some 30 works, winner of prestigious awards at important international and national documentary film festivals. His first work, The Incubator (1965) won the Critics' Award in Varna, 1965. Guerillas-Supporters (1974) swept the Grand Prix for Best Documentary at the Bulgarian Feature Film Festival, Varna 1974 and a diploma at the IFF, Leipzig 1974. The Air (1975) won the Special Award of the Union of the Filmmakers of DDR, IFF Leipzig '80; First prize - Kustendil '75. At Nightfall (1976) received the Critics' Award at the Bulgarian Short Film Festival, Plovdiv '76 and the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers Award for 1976. The Lifelong Musician swept the Golden Rhyton award at the Bulgarian Short Film Festival, Plovdiv '80 and the Silver Dove award at IFF Leipzig '80; Grand Prix at Lille IFF '80.
