Director Carlos Agulló is making his film debut with the multi-award winning documentary, "Plot for Peace". Listed as one of the eighteen, strong, 2014, Oscar contenders for Best Documentary by Variety, the film tells the little known story of French-Algerian businessman, Monsieur Jacques, whose behind-the-scenes diplomacy and business ventures helped bring an end to apartheid in South Africa. The New York Times gave it their Critic's Choice award and deemed it "that rare documentary that both augments the historical record and is paced like a thriller." Agulló was born in Madrid and studied Fine Arts at the Complutense University of Madrid. He began his career as an assistant editor with some of Spain's most accomplished filmmakers including Alejandro Amenábar. Agulló's collaboration with Amenábar on the Oscar-winning film "The Sea Inside" launched his career as a film editor. Agulló later worked with directors Mateo Gil, Oskar Santos, Sergio Candel and Jorge Sánchez-Cabezudo, to name a few. As a child, the only toy that could hold Agulló's attention was the Cinexin toy, film projector (his first one played Super 8 Disney films!) Later, his parents bought a Sony Handycam with the intention of recording his newborn sister, but Agulló commandeered the camera to make his own stop-motion films starring his Star Wars figurines. Agulló's parents were politically committed against the dictatorship in Spain at the time. They supported human rights and feminist groups and often took Agulló to demonstrations where they would inevitably end up running from the police. Agulló attended an English-language school, but was expelled at thirteen. He then took it upon himself to study abroad. Agulló ended up in a small town in Mississippi completely removed from anything familiar. His host parents, both Vietnam Vets, and their children welcomed Agulló into their modest home in the Deep South. Here, Agulló discovered racial segregation, shooting practice during P.E., and occasional brawls with cross-town rivals. Although difficult at times, he bonded well enough with his host family that they asked him to shoot the family dog after it was struck by a car and suffering terribly. Later, back in Spain, after an Algerian drug lord threatened to kill him, Agulló knew it was time to change his life. His passion for rock climbing, Muay Thai kickboxing, and motorcycle racing pulled him away from his peers, who were not so circumspect. In college Agulló took many jobs to support himself, including nude modeling for his fellow art students. After college, Agulló made a living recording and editing wedding videos. Agulló is now receiving accolades of his own for directing and editing "Plot for Peace".
